Kiehl’s challengers skin updates – 1 week in

Meet 2 new Kiehl’s Challengers and see how the girls are coming along using their Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Serum.
Jodi:
As an over stressed, over tired advertising student I’m continually looking for the thing to trick my skin into thinking it’s fresher, plumper and more vibrant than it actually is. Over the last couple of years in the midst of travelling to and from a completely different climates, my skin reacts very easily to it’s surrounds. If I use something that doesn’t suit it on a particular day, it sends me nasty signs in the form of dry patches as well as some pigmentation. As I’m now on the cusp of mid-20’s I’ve also noticed laugh lines where there never was any before. Like most freckled ladies, I’d like them to not be so obvious, more of a whisper than an out right holler. Nice.

I was very excited to find out Kiehl’s was coming to South Africa last year but being in Cape Town means it’s hard to get my hands on any of the lovely products until a family member goes up to Joburg. I was first introduced to Kiehl’s while living in Toronto, Canada with my chef cousin who constantly battled the driest of hands. The Hand Salve saved her hands and when I was allowed to borrow a wee bit now and then, it was sheer heaven.

Being one of the lucky ladies to be selected for Kiehl’s 28 day challenge, it’s safe to say my skin is more than ready for Recovery. The essential oils jam packed into the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate smells like a warm hug- gentle but not over powering. My nightly routine is very simple since I’ve cut out the nonsense which has been the safest so far: Organic Cold Pressed Coconut Oil to cleanse and slough off my make up then removed with a warm soft face cloth, Clarin’s Toning Lotion with Camomile, Yves Rocher Hydra Vegetal moisturizer and Clinique All About Eyes. On lazier nights I use Reversa Cleansing Micellar Solution and the Yves Rocher. I’ve used several night time serums but none have really been given repurchase status let alone: Must Have.
Since trying the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate I’ve woken up with my nasty dry patches looking a tad better but this might only be me since it’s very early days still. I’ll keep reporting back on that though. A huge plus for me, it could be the ritual of applying something to your skin right before bed, is that it seemed to help me fall asleep from the soft lavender scent. I’ll be as brutally honest as possible over the next month since I really am hoping this lives up to my very long check list and fingers crossed, a must have.

me 2
I am familiar with the Kiehls products and have been a fan since I first discovered them on a trip to New York and subsequently was able to purchase the products in London while I was living there. So I am thrilled that Kiehls is in SA and now also easily obtainable in Cape Town.  Having said that – testing the KMRC is the first time that I am using a Kiels product again!
I use only natural and organic products on my skin and steer clear of anything containing parabens or any other chemical additives.  So morning and night I cleanse with a natural lavender infused cleansing cream by Simply Bee followed by the Nimue skin conditioner to tone and remove any cleanser left behind.  My skin tends to be very dehydrated with some redness and dry patches in the winter so I follow this with the Nimue Super Hydrating Serum and finish off with an anti aging cream by Simply Bee.  In the mornings I use the Stila Illuminating BB cream which is a fantastic all-in-one product.
Dehydration, pigmentation and (not so!) fine lines are my biggest concerns when it comes to my skin and I have definitely noticed a change from an oily t-zone and dehydrated cheeks to more dehydrated all over.  I agree with the other ‘change your skin challenge’ participants – taking these up close and personal photos AND what’s more sharing them with the Kim Gray blog community is a bit daunting/challenging/downright scary!  But oh well, here I go!
(Clean face)

My skin always feels slightly tight after cleansing no matter what cleanser I use but improves slightly after the conditioner.  At night I then apply the Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate as directed (by the way I love the ‘ceremony’ of patting  my hands together to spread the product evenly and inhaling the delicious lavender infused scent!) after which I have to admit to feeling a slight (but not at all unpleasant)tingling sensation.  My skin immediately loses any hint of that dry, tight feeling and takes on a lovely healthy glow which lasts until the morning.  Upon waking my skin has this amazing velvety smooth feel to it too.

(On applying KMRC)
I have been using the concentrate for about 1 week now and I am definitely seeing an improvement in the overall condition of my skin and that aforementioned glow seems to last all day now which is amazing!
So far, so great – I am loving this product!
Thank you so much for the opportunity to test this great treatment,
Alex

Bianca – 1 Week Check In

Before – day 1

Hello everyone! So after 1 week of using the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate there are definitely noticeable changes, both in my appearance and to the touch. I must admit I have been ‘indulging’ with the MRC, using about 5 drops instead of the recommended 3 drops as I felt my skin needed an extra boost. For the next week I will stick to the 3 drops in the evening. But too much of a good thing is a good thing right?

Let’s start with the touchy feely stuff first. The first morning after using my liquid gold I immediately noticed how much plumper my skin felt. It feels like the moisture my skin was craving was injected into my skin overnight without making it feel heavy, if that makes sense. I’ve tried using thick night creams and all they really did was make my skin feel weighted and oily the next morning. With Kiehl’s MRC my skin feels wonderfully hydrated without all the oiliness. While I’m on the topic of oiliness – girls if you have oily skin do not be afraid of this product. I have oily skin and this is a dream. It is a misconception that putting oil on your face makes your skin more oily – quite the opposite really! I love oils for my face (for nighttime not day obviously) and have found that my oil production has calmed down over the years of trying facial oils at night. So if you have oily skin like me I am sure you are going to love this product as well – don’t be scared that it is an oil. As mentioned my skin is plumper to the touch, and along with that it is super smooth. I seriously want to touch my face all the time it feels so great.

On to the appearance. I’ll let you judge for yourself but I can definitely see a difference in what my skin looks like. The most noticeable for me is if you look at the before photo where I’m looking to your right, you will see that the indentations on my skin (left by old acne) have plumped up and are hardly visible anymore – bonus! I still have some redness, but I don’t expect that to disappear immediately, especially with it being winter. My hyperpigmentation is still there, but again, those little marks are stubborn and I’m confident that over time I will see a difference – it’s only week 1 after all! I am really happy with the overall appearance of my skin. It looks healthier, smoother and more radiant. I’m well on my way to being comfortable with wearing a tinted moisturizer – go Kiehl’s!

Pippa – 1 Wk Check in

I introduced you to the Kiehl’s Change Your Skin challenge last week, and Kim Gray featured it on her blog here.

So this is my face after applying the KMRC Midnight concentrate last night, a week after having used the product…What u think?

I have to be honest and say I can’t notice a HUGE difference just yet. However, I haven’t exactly given the product much of a chance as have been having a pretty bad time in terms of my own little life since I started using it.

A violent tummy bug, a sore throat and cough = not much sleep in the last week. So I’m not sure that any product could have remedied my lack of sleep and tired looking face over the past week :-(

Regardless, I love applying it. The scent and the texture are too beautiful and it makes me feel good each time I use it, so I look forward to giving it more of a chance now that I’m not feeling so crap!

Catch up next week then…

Delphine – 1 wk check in

This week , as tweeted my bf’s little girl said to me “Your face looks different but in a good way “ From the mouth of babes ?? Dehydration is a constant battle which escalates in the winter months and I really feel that if nothing else MRC is definitely keeping things hydrated. I also have not had a breakout which is very often the case when using a new product  J
Further to my hydration issue my skin went through some tough environmental changes in a space of 4 days. I drove from PE with the car heater/ AC  on to the Boland which is much less humid than the coast and far colder. Spent time in front of the heater and the hearth with friends and family and went up Table Mountain in an icy wind and not once did my skin feel chapped, dry and tight. I can only credit this level of skin comfort to the use of the MRC because on other occasions when making this trip I have had dry tight angry skin. So I can safely say even though I don’t see a change and others do I am certainly feeling it!

On the spot

So as I mentioned in my Kiehl’s Post. I recently had an where-can-I-hideaway break out. I’m putting it down to testing too many different products in a short space of time, the anticipation of showing my skin to you guys for the Kiehl’s Challenge or a good old pregnancy hormone surge, who knows! Anyway so I tested 3 products that have helped solve the problem at bay!

Available at Rubybox, the Gatineau Clear and Perfect SOS Stick is great as it has a self sterilizing ball and is easily applied. It’s a clear, light liquid – so no wearing thick, mud drying like blotches on your spots. It helps  disinfect and eliminate imperfections while preventing new ones. I love the cooling effect the stainless steel roller ball offers. You can buy it here!

The Vichy Normaderm Hyaluspot comes in an easy to use tube that’s perfect for small make up bags for when you need that much needed zap! A clear gel like texture, it coats the spot in a protective film,  protecting ones skin from the further spreading of bacteria. It contains 1% Hyaluronic which is both moisturising and acts as an anti inflammatory and 1.5% Salicylic Acid that draws out impurities to aid in faster heeling. This little tube also promises to rid any scaring or marks that spots can so often leave behind. Available at select leading pharmacies.

The Skin Republic Spots and Blemish, Anti Spot Pore Refining Mask is great for when your skin is generally in a mess (Where as the above two products are great for when you have the odd spot). It reduces redness, helps clear blemishes and spots, refines pores and reduces shine. Lie back and place the coated sheet on your face – becuase spots are stressful – just kick back! Rub any excess serum into the skin once removing the mask, and skin will be left hydrated and feeling soft – no dry, oil sapping effects. Chamomile also aids as an anti-inflammatory to calm the skin! You can read more about it here!

Hope this helps for those stressful pesky spots ladies! XX

Skin Q&A with Dr. med. Erich Schulte of QMS Medicosmetics

As you should know by now, I’m a huge fan of QMS Medicosmetics. Dr. med. Erich Schulte, Founder of QMS Medicosmetics was recently in CT and he answers some of our biggest skin concerns and questions.

Is there anyway we can delay the signs of ageing and turn back time through just diet and lifestyle alone?

The short answer is yes you can, a healthy lifestyle and diet can most definitely improve the health and quality of the skin, which then results in a delay in the signs of ageing. But you need to recognize there are limits with this method and for best results find ways to boost your skin’s health from within. Nutricosmetics are an excellent way to do this; I specifically formulated our Intravital to recondition, regenerate and protect the skin.

Always remember enjoy life in moderation and you will look younger for longer.

What are the main contributing factors to ageing that we bring on ourselves?

Our lifestyle is the main contributor to how our skin ages. Skin reacts to its external environment and our modern day living is harsh, whether dehydration from air-conditioning to pollutants in the atmosphere, all can detrimentally impact the skin. We are seeing a real growth in younger clients using QMS Medicosmetics around the world and at our central London Flagship Spa our second largest client age sector is what I like to call the ‘Facebook Generation’ i.e. around 30 to 35 who come to us as they want to be proactive in the prevention of ageing.

Genetic related factors are also a major contributor to ageing but these we are born with.

With regard to environmental factors – the sun, etc – does this affect everyone in the same way?

Actually no as the more pigmented your skin the less harmful are the UV rays. I do always recommend that everyone protect their skin as UV rays are everywhere and if you are in the sun always use a sun protection that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Even on a cloudy day 80% of UV rays can pass through and with water reflection you experience increases of 50%.

Do black skins age better than white skins, and if so, why?

“Yes. This is because the structure of black skin is more robust and therefore more resistant to the contributing factors that lead to lines and wrinkles. But sunblock should remain paramount.”

 How important are supplements?

“This is skin regeneration from within. Our diet is generally lacking in certain vital minerals and vitamins and as we age, absorption also becomes more difficult. I do recommend Intravital, as each capsule contains the necessary vitamins to recondition, regenerate and protect the natural skin structure from within. The hydrolised collagen is effectively absorbed and skin quality is improved.”

What have been the biggest scientific breakthroughs in terms of anti-ageing skincare and techniques, including injections/pills/salon treatments?

Science is an absolute passion of mine and early on in my career as a surgeon I understood the importance of revolutionizing scientific techniques to improve how skincare performs,” he says. “The future of skincare is improving the delivery system and techniques to enhance the metabolism of ingredients in both products and treatments. My top three breakthroughs are the conditioning of natural soluble collagens to be able to penetrate the skin, Stem Cell technology and Electro Galvanic transportation (electric micro-current technology) through the skin barrier without destroying the protective functions.

Collagen is the most important protein in your skin, 65% of the body’s proteins are collagen and they are responsible for the elasticity of the skin. As a trauma and then cosmetic surgeon I researched wound healing and found collagen to be highly significant. This led me to develop a method to condition natural soluble collagens so that they can be re-absorbed into the epidermis and be applied topically to the skin thereby allowing skin regeneration.

Secondly my two plant stem products, Cellular Marine and Cellular Alpine, are based on revolutionary technology, which has led to a quantum leap in cosmetics. Plant stem cells are highly regenerative and often considered the fountain of youthful skin; it is their self-renewal capacity that is so valuable in anti-aging skincare and harnessing their power requires a highly complex process. Cellular Marine (Stem Cell Line Eraser) contains herbal stem cells from the tissue of the Sea Fennel, these contain all essential nutrients and ingredients to protect the skin’s stem cells. The basis of Cellular Alpine eye care is the rare Alpine Rose plant as it is ideal for the sensitive area around the eyes.

Using plant stem cells is increasingly common in the skincare sector, for the most effective and intensive anti-aging it is important to use high quality ingredients that will enhance the stimulation of new skin cells, improve the skin’s metabolism and protect against premature skin aging.

E/MC Electric Micro Current technology is driving QMS Medicosmetics next generation in rejuvenating skincare. The first product to use this revolutionary technology is Ion Skin Equaliser, which uses a specially formulated serum and a cream, which work in conjunction to generate a gentle micro current of electricity over the skin. These increases in the skin’s bioelectrical system stimulate collagen and elastin fibres while active ingredients are transferred into the inner epidermal layers through a process that accelerates the metabolism of the skin and maximizes its regenerative mechanisms during the night. Ion Skin Equaliser is unique in the skincare sector as the use of “iontophoresis” is more commonly achieved through specialized equipment. This has proved to be one of the most products in the QMS Medicosmetics collection.

Treatments that increase skin cell metabolism through the use of oxygen have to be one of the most important developments. I customized our Oxygen Energy Applicator to use 98% pure oxygen, which means you can improve this metabolism rate and enhance the effect of active ingredients used in the treatment.

What is the most effective turn-back-time and anti-ageing regime/treatment short of cosmetic surgery?

Tissue augmentation with the help of skin fillers will have an immediate impact on the appearance of fine and wrinkles.

For a long-term transformation getting a regime in place is key, an optimum skincare regeneration system would be to commence a collagen replacement therapy. Collagen is critical for the moisturizing process; it is the protein that keeps skin’s tone, youth and elasticity. Skin’s production of collagen decreases as skin ages leading to a loss of moisture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. With QMS Medicosmetics you can help reverse the appearance of ageing by addressing the underlying cause – loss of collagen.

What is the optimum age to start an anti-ageing regime and what can we realistically expect to achieve?

From thirty is a good age to start as from 25 our collagen production starts to decrease and if you get into a good regime by 30 then you can take around five years off your age. If you start young you can definitely stay young.

Are women more prone to skin problems than men? If so, why?

“Yes. It’s all hormonally related. Men hit a problem at puberty. They might get the odd spot or full-blown acne, but then it gradually passes (in general). Women are different due to the complexity of their hormonal system, so they might be prone to problems at different stages of their lives.”

Are more men taking on anti-ageing regimes? What treatments are there for them, or specific things they should be doing?

Simple answer is yes men, and particularly younger men, are taking on more anti-ageing regimes. With QMS Medicosmetics I actually designed the collection to be able to work for men and women of every age as essentially skin shares the same structure. However what we do with our skin creates a differentiation in how we should treat it.

For men keeping skin deeply cleansed, exfoliated and moisturized are the basic regimen but I would always recommend men also to take our Intravital supplements as just two capsules a day will help protect skin from damage as well as stimulate regeneration. Treatments to boost circulation such as oxygen facials not only help maintain a healthy appearance but also target any specific issues. QMS Medicosmetics has a strong following in men and we are creating a highlighted capsule collection, men love the science side and our plant stem cell inspired Cellular Duo are probably the bestsellers with our male clientele.

Bobbi Brown loves

I’m very excited about these new Bobbi Brown products as I think they are going to make ones beauty routine such a pleasure!

Bobbi Brown launches a new skin care range with an exclusive SuperCitrus Complex to brighten, moisturise and even skin tone.

The Extra Bright, lack-lustre-busting-trio, consists of a Foaming Cleanser (R410)  to rid dull looking skin impurities, an Advanced Serum (R790) to target dark spots and minimize fine lines and an Advanced Moisture Lotion (R680) to soothe any redness in the skin and strengthens skin against hyper-pigmentation. It also prepares the skin for treatments to follow.

I’ve been trying it out and it’s not an expected creamy lotion but more like a face splash. It ads a fabulous glow to the skin. These 3 Extra Bright products work together to minimise skin-dulling dark spots, unevenness, discolouration and brighten the skin for a more radiant glow. I love the simple, modern packaging! It’s as fresh as the product itself.

Oh my gosh, the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Sticks (R335) are amazing and so fun to use as it glides on effortlessly – this is going to save one so much time as the creamy texture is so easy to smudge and blend! Love it! With 8 hours of long last colour, use the shadow sticks to darken, highlight or define eyes.

Win Nimue products to the value of R1000 with Tosca

I recently went for a lovely Nimue Facial and have been enjoying some of their range. Now you stand the chance to win some too! Yay!

Janine from Nimue performed my facial and talks us through what you will experience as well as an over view of the products used. Thanks Janine!

ACTIVE REJUVENATION TREATMENT (15 % Bio-active complex)

A standard active skin rejuvenation treatment. Indicated for environmentally damaged, hyperpigmented and problematic skin classifications.  It is a potent, yet gentle and safe active treatment delivering powerful results, culminating in refined texture, pore size, elasticity, radiance and vitality.

1. I started off with cleansing the Skin with our Cleansing gel this is a soap-free 2 in1 creamy cleansing gel. It is non- alkaline base ( so it doesn’t strip the skin of natural oils) with light exfoliation properties, gently hydrates and removes make up.

I’ve been using the cleansing gel and love the gel like texture that becomes a creamy, more foamy consistency. I love the lemon-curd look and feel and mentally, this just cheers me up 🙂

2. Followed up with toning the your skin with our Conditioner tonic. This helps to promote skin health restoration. It is improves skin texture, clarity and freshness. Because of the 7% Alpha Hydroxy acid complex ( for skin exfoliation and renewal), the conditioner accelerates skin rejuvenation process. Degreasing and deep cleansing properties as well as anti- inflammatory and anti- bacterial.

I’m loving using the above refreshing Nimue Conditioner Tonic (Toner) for Hyperpigmented Skin. A 140 ml, refreshing spritz that is bound to last a few months. Janine did mention that its very important to use a sun block every day due to its exfoliating properties.

3. I then applied our Exfoliating Enzyme. This is an enzyme complex ( fruit enzymes) that gently detaches dead skin cells and promotes cell renewal. Non – irritating and non- abrasive enzyme exfoliator that refines skin texture and leaving a smooth, hydrated and radiant skin. This process also optimises the penetration of active ingredients to follow.

4. I follow next with the application of the Bio- active complex. It is a 15% Triple Alpha Hydroxy Acid Complex ( Use a Combination of AHA) at a pH that is effective for Skin rejuvenation and renewal. Optimises penetration of home care products. Give dramatic and visible results in skin

5. I then Neutralise the Bio- active complex which also leaves the skin hydrated

6. After drying the skin. I then applied the Alginate mask which is a setting mask that hydrates, soothes and calms the skin creating a smooth texture. It has a Green tea extract with antioxidant properties to protect the skin. This is lots of fun – like thick goo, applied all over the face, just your nostrils open. It dries and peels off having become a rubber like texture.

7. This was followed by an application of Moisture lite which hydrates and balances the skin and improves skin texture

8. As well as an application of our SPF 40. A light weight non- oily cream offering certified high broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and anti-ageing benefits. It helps to assist in reducing and preventing the visible signs of photo ageing. As well as hydrating and wrinkle smoothing effect.

The Hydro Lip Therapy is also divine with Vitamin E Ester and Chamomile to nourish and protect the lips, diminishing sign of ageing. It smoothes lips with a delicate layer or product – perfect for those that don’t like a heavy, glossy feel.
