Last week I had a reader question:

Reader Q: “Hi I have read and heard so much about Banting. I have to say I am still so hesitant to try it. I have always used a dietician/nutritionist to aid my weightloss. Why do they not advocate this way of life. I already have high blood pressure and am insulin resistant ( on medication). I worry about increasing cholesterol. Can anyone assure me that I will not do more harm to myself cholesterol wise whilst following this diet? How much of research and testing has gone into this?”

Astrid, Banting Coach, A:

“Following a LCHF eating plan will lower blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar, reduce your risk for diabetes, lower triglycerides and increase your HDL ‘good’ cholesterol levels. And as an added bonus you will lose weight ! :)

Many people are still stuck in the old school of thinking, and on the traditional food pyramid which advocates a high carb low fat diet. This is quite simply not a healthy way of eating. The sugar added to low fat products and the grains that are a staple on a high carb diet (promoted as “healthy whole grains”), combined with unstable and dangerous fake fats and seed oils, cause massive amounts of inflammation in the body. Inflammation, not cholestrerol, is the bad guy when it comes to heart disease.

Your body needs cholesterol to function. It is vital to life. The only bad cholesterol are the small dense particle type (a sub-set of LDL cholesterol). A diet high in saturated fat, as advocated in a LCHF eating plan, will promote large fluffly LDL particles and drastically reduce inflammation in the body. Under these circumstances cholesterol ceases to a concern for heart health.

Have a look at the video clip on my website http://www.lowcarbhighfat.co.za to see how it came about the high carb low fat way of eating was recommended as the healthiest way to eat. I can send you lots of links to research and articles on the subject of LCHF, cholesterol and blood sugar. Drop me an email on .”

This is why if you’re in serious need of a lifestyle change and looking to improve i.e.

  • WEIGHT LOSS WITH REDUCEDBELLY FAT
  • IMPROVED MUSCLE TONE
  • NO HUNGER PANGS ORCRAVINGS
  • INCREASED ENERGY LEVELS
  • BETTER SKIN AND TEETH
  • ABLE TO THINK MORECLEARLY
  • FEWER MOOD SWINGS ANDENERGY LOWS
  • REDUCED RISK FOR DISEASESUCH AS DIABETESHEARTDISEASE AND ALZHEIMER’S
  • INFERTILITY

I can’t recommend doing this course enough! Learn about the “Carb Flu” – how to tweak your diet accordingly ( own energy, weight loss etc) and know exactly how much fat, carbs etc is do-able for your body! Did you know milk is high in carbs? I didn’t.

This week My weight stayed the same and my hip loss of 1.5cm stayed the same, and then I lost 1 cm around the waist. Something I have noticed is that I never get that bloated feeling anymore – in the past, after dinner I could easily look pregnant if I relaxed my tummy. I am also eating a much smaller dinner. Last night my husband and I shared a steak for dinner with salad and we were totally satisfied. We are concentrating on a proper breakfast ( salmon offcuts, eggs and avo usually) and find we don’t snack like we used to. We used to go through bags of nuts – I haven’t had to buy in ages! So this diet really doesn’t end up that expensive in the long run!

I’ve not done my homework yet this wk – But its all about learning to read the food labels, how to keep track of your carbs and more! I’m still finding this way of life easy to stick to and it pretty much has become a way of life, verses a diet. The only problem I have, I can barely drink a 2nd glass of wine these days :) Wheeee!

p.s. yes – banting doesn’t exactly advocate alcohol – another chapter in this wks course (understanding the effects etc) but if you’re not in it to lose weight / or it becomes a way of life and you then enjoy a glass of wine in evenings (as getting into the swing of it you really should be as ‘strict’ as possible) then can I recommend Lammershoek Wines. Organically produced, no additives and delicious!
