Simonsig, cuvèe restaurant – a new years must!

On the 23rd, while getting into the festive Christmas spirit, I had the opportunity to lunch at the picturesque, Cuvèe Restaurant on Simonsig Wine Estate. With a long family history, Simonsig comprises of 210 hectares producing red, white and Methode Cap Classique which can be enjoyed world wide, or at their modern take on Cape Dutch styled, Cuvèe restaurant.

Surrounded by hydrangeas, lush lawns and vineyards, this time of year is perfect for sitting on the deck and sipping bubbles, delicious Simonsig bubbles that is! I was in awe of this bubbly Chandelier, pretty impressive & festive, not to mention the outstanding food! We did a wine pairing with each course allowing us to sample the wide variety Simonsig has to offer.

I started with the mushroom and healy’s mature cheddar tart with tomato jam, while my husband had the Cuvee beef caesar –  chalmar tartare, pancetta, white anchovy, cos lettuce and egg.  My tart was delicious with the sharp cheddar and sweet tomoto balancing each other to perfection! So good!

A decadent lunch was followed by mushroom stuffed quail with pancetta, pearl onions, crushed potato and a grape & chardonnay sauce – heaven! Now while I am not a red wine drinker, this award winning Redhill Pinotage (Veritas Double Gold) was beautifully light with its berry, plummy deliciousness. More please!

Now this is my kind of lunch! Fillet of line fish with a prawn parcel, spicy burnt corn avocado salsa and a prawn spoom – light and summery! Loved the big wooden bowl and presentation.

The desserts were out of this world, and super generous, but trust me, a DENT was made! The Java Crème Brulèe with a viennese biscuit is a fabulous way to end a meal with it’s creamy, coffee flavour, and oh the Cuvèe Sunday, it’s any “little” boys dream! With its nutty meringue, strawberry sorbet, blue berry cheesecake ice cream and fresh berries it’s both decadent and refreshing!

Ah and the afternoon had to end off with a glass of our wedding bubbly, the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rose! Ooh and did you know, Simonsig serve bubbly, oysters and local music talent, on the terrace and lush lawns every Saturday between 15h00 – 18h00.

Spice up a slow afternoon with aphrodisiacs from the West Coast seas, whilst sipping on South Africa’s first Cap Classique, Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel, Kaapse Vonkel Rosé or the prestige cuvée, Simonsig Cuvée Royale. With an array of fine cheese platters as an alternative and local musicians adding to the tranquil setting of this family owned Stellenbosch landmark, everyone will have something to look forward to. It’s a must!
