To spa or not to spa

I loved this, just in, from The Petticoat Parlour.

Because the definition of a ‘Spa’ has not yet been officially regulated, this can lead to some confusion among consumers who do not know the differences. In a bid to set the record straight, the new Day Spa in Green Point, Petticoat Parlour provides a glossary of terms to help clarify what distinguishes a beauty salon, a spa and a day spa.”

*  A ‘Beauty Salon’ offers cosmetic treatments within a quick fast-paced environment.

*  A ‘Day Spa’ offers treatments exclusively on a day-use basis. The critical difference with a day spa is that you should feel relaxed as the noise levels aren’t as high as those in a salon.

*  A ‘Destination spa’ has the sole purpose of helping you lead/jumpstart a healthier lifestyle.  This is normally a minimum two night process where spa cuisine is served exclusively and exercise and educational programming takes place i.e. smoking cessation programmes.

*  A ‘Resort/Hotel Spa’ is located in a resort/hotel offering spa facilities together with fitness classes. This is a good option for people looking for a spa combined with other activities i.e. golf, and is ideal for business travellers and families.

*  A ‘Medical Spa’ offers spa treatments alongside treatments requiring medical supervision, eg laser resurfacing, mild plastic surgery or Botox injections etc.

*  A ‘Club Spa’ is day spa located in a fitness facility.

A ‘day spa’ includes a portfolio of treatments such as massages, scrubs, facials, manicures and pedicures, all of which can form part of integral beauty routine.  A day spa is somewhere to relax for a few hours as a mini-getaway, where the focus is on a prettier you mixed with a smidgen of pampering.

A ‘beauty salon’ deals with more cosmetic treatments – or what could be referred to as emergency or quick-fix treatments, such waxing, tweezing , a pop of colour after you have fixed your broken nail with gel/acrylic nails … i.e. all the treatments quickly enhance the customer’s outer appearance and image.

“Petticoat Parlour is a ‘day-spa’ welcoming customers into a world where serenity rules in an environment that’s reminiscent of a bygone era when mobiles didn’t exist and when blackberries and apples were only fruit.” Says the Petticoat Parlour. It looks awesome, must go and try it out. xx
