BEAUTY FEATURE FRIDAY – SYLVIE HURFORD FOR L’ OREAL

I was delighted when Sylvie offered to do a  guest feature on BEAUTY FEATURE FRIDAY. I totally relate to her article below, having endorsed and supported brands on Kim Gray. It’s not because we have to, but because we want to and because we believe in that product. So thanks for your ‘behind the scenes’ insight Sylvie - I’ll leave Sylvie to it!

Why me? Why anyone?

So there’s been a lot of hoo-ha lately about ‘faces’ and ‘brand ambassadors’ and ‘spokesmodels’ and the endless uncovering of huge Hollywood heavyweights appearing in Japanese commercials for everything from peanuts to pantyhose. We are flooded with tweets and facebook updates from some of our local favourite lovelies punting sunglasses, tanning products, twisps and nightclubs. So who are we supposed to believe? Why them? Why anybody?

In February this year, I was appointed make up spokesperson for L’Oreal cosmetics. This title incorporates brand ambassador, name, face and in some instances creative director of make up, in association with the company on fashion weeks, advertorials, campaigns and editorial. It is a marriage of a 15-year career, with the biggest cosmetics company in the world. It has come after other offers, much sponsorship, countless campaigns for some of the other big players in the industry, some heavy flirtation and is undoubtedly the biggest and most important ‘marriage’ that I’ve made in my career, and was 100% worth waiting for.

People are most circumspect about spokespeople; their first instinct is to try to catch you out.

‘Yes’, they say ‘ but do you really use L’Oreal’? Um, yes.

Do you really love it’? Um YES.

Wearing someone’s sunglasses is one thing. Tying in a career, contractually with someone is commitment – and not one you take lightly. And not one you do with just anyone – c’mon this is L’Oreal we’re talking about – first prize, prom king

I represent Everywoman, and every make up artist. We all use different brands, for different things and we all know that. What we don’t always remember is that nobody knows that better than cosmetics companies and beauty houses.

Of the 10 brands you have in your kit, are 2 ours? Fantastic! None? Well what can we do, manufacture, market or develop for you to change your mind or to fulfill your needs?

And that’s the reality.

And its awesome. Sometimes its cocktails at swishy functions, others, stuck in mud on the way to a location 2 hours out of town at the crack of dawn. Some days its battling the only two roads I know in Johannesburg (Katherine street and Rivonia Road BTW!) in a Kia Picanto with a broken Garmin, others its all drivers in Mercedes with mineral water and newspapers. Some, its shooting highly technically challenging make up campaigns, sweating backstage, furiously answering emails, talking at functions and rushing to do the school run, others its business class. But it’s all amazing

So in answer to your question, do I use L’Oreal, do I love it, do I recommend it? Yes, yes, YES.

Here are my top personal five. They might not be yours but hey, something will be!

Extra Volume Collagene mascara by L’Oréal Paris
I am evangelical about this stuff – I know, its getting old! I don’t leave home without it and although I’m lucky enough to get it by the bucketload, if I run out and the courier is only coming in the morning, I buy it!

Glam Shine 6H Volumizer Addictive Peach
The name says it all! This lives in my bag, my kit and my cubbyhole.

(Kim: Sorry to butt in, I am using the Absolutely Red Glam Shine 6H and love it. Fab colour for winter.)

Loreal Vitalift Self Heating Cleansing Wash
Seriously, this is RIDICULOUS. I don’t want to ruin the fun. But it warms up! I am obsessed with technology and this just blows my mind. I’m a huge fan of exfoliating and this does the job, daily.

L’oreal True Match Mineral Powder In my kit,  in every colour. Not too matte, not too sheeny, cute built in brush and MOST importantly doesn’t give that tight powdery feeling on your skin that makes you want to pop your eyes and stretch your cheeks to get the life back which I hate

Elnett spray
Duh. Smells like ballet classes, holds tighter than a clingy boyfriend and brushes out with no residue. Ta dah!

L’Oreal Paris Color Appeal Trio Pro in Night & Day Black
Oh come on… just try it! Pigment is brilliant, tiny little specks of sparkle in all the right places and pretty much a fool proof way to get a smoky eye.
